When it comes to driving, experience is very important. But you don’t have to wait years and spend crazy amount of money on lessons just to get your license to drive.
You see, I came from a very small shanty town in one of the small islands in the Philippines. We didn’t have much growing up, my father had an old bike that he uses every day for work. So, driving my own car wasn’t one of the things I thought I would do in my life.
When I came to Australia, the public transport is so cheap and so easy to get access to that I just didn’t have the need to learn how to drive and get my license. Looking back now, I’ve realised I’ve wasted so much time waiting for the bus and trains, that a 15-minute journey would take me at least 20-30minutes in the bus. The great thing is, that’s old news now.
It all started to change in December, 2017, when a family emergency has forced me to get my license – I had to get my license.
I can still remember that day so clearly and as we were walking so slowly towards the emergency, I made a promise to myself that I won’t let that happen again. I said to myself, that I am going to do everything I can to make sure I can look after the people I love the best way I possibly can. I am going to get my license, so this will not happen again.
When you life gets tough... you become tougher!
Few months after that wake-up call, in January, we had to move to a small town in Queensland where the temperature in summer time can get up to 45 degrees Celsius.
I knew, I had no other choice and I had no time to waste…I had to get my license. I could not let my little girl walk in that heat every day when she goes to school. So, I wasted no time, I started reading the book so I can pass the theory test and start learning to drive and in January 29,2018, just a month later, I passed the theory test and got my Learner’s Permit. I can now learn how to drive.
8 weeks later... I finally did it! I passed my practical driving test ...even if I have never driven before in my life!
And then in March 27,2018 exactly 8 weeks later, I got my Green P’s – I can now drive the car unsupervised and on my own.
I don’t know what your story is and what circumstances you are facing right now, and I hope it’s not as bad as what I had to face. But all I know is that, you too can pass your driving test faster than you thought possible for you.
I’m not saying that you will achieve the same result that I did, because our situations are different. What I had to deal with I would never wish for anyone.
